Catchment delineation
Delineated and standardized 20 strategic catchments using DEM-based watershed analysis.
National catchment planning · Nigeria
A national-scale programme combining watershed delineation, baseline spatial analysis, field engagement and stakeholder evidence to support integrated management of Northern Nigeria's land and water resources.
Project objective
The assignment delineated 20 strategic catchments, completed integrated baseline studies within each catchment and produced 20 Strategic Catchment Management Plans. The work required consistent national spatial standards while reflecting distinctive environmental, hydrological and socio-economic conditions.
My contribution
My GIS work covered the chain from catchment delineation and baseline evidence to stakeholder-data integration, cartography and final plan production.
Delineated and standardized 20 strategic catchments using DEM-based watershed analysis.
Integrated environmental, hydrological, land-use and socio-spatial datasets for every catchment.
Produced maps of topography, drainage, land cover, erosion risk, flood-prone areas and ecological features.
Analysed consultation data and translated community and institutional priorities into GIS layers.
Developed cartographic outputs and spatial datasets used throughout the 20 management plans.
Maintained common data structures, spatial standards and cartographic conventions across all catchments.
Spatial workflow
Use elevation and drainage behaviour to establish strategic catchment boundaries.
Assemble evidence on terrain, hydrology, land cover, erosion, flooding, ecology and communities.
Collect local and institutional knowledge through field visits and consultations.
Convert stakeholder inputs and technical findings into spatial priorities and interventions.
Produce standardized maps, datasets, plans and an interactive WebGIS.
